The number of new fraud cases has nearly tripled since the beginning of the year

Nearly 52,000 criminal proceedings under Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, «Fraud» were initiated in 2024, according to the Prosecutor General's Office. This is 13% less than during the same period last year. However, the number of cases that make it to court has increased.
51,992 criminal proceedings for fraud charges were initiated in the first eight months of 2024. This is 13% fewer than the same period last year when a record number of cases were opened under this article.
At the beginning of 2024, the number of new fraud-related criminal cases remained high, averaging over 8,000 per month. However, by May, the number of new cases had decreased by 1.4 times. August saw the lowest number of new fraud cases this year, with only 2,980 proceedings, almost three times fewer than at the start of the year.
Despite the overall decrease in new cases, more cases are reaching court—12,572 in total, accounting for 24% of all cases opened this year. In comparison, this figure was just 14% in 2023.
