More than half of the cases go to court

1,623 cases of pornography have been recorded in Ukraine in the first five months of 2024, according to the General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine (GPU). While the number of cases involving child pornography has decreased by 1.4 times compared to the same period last year, cases involving adult content have increased by 1.6 times. Currently, 60% of cases involving 18+ content have reached the court.
871 criminal cases under Article 301 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, “Importation, Manufacture, Sale, and Distribution of Pornographic Items,” were opened in the first five months of 2024. This is almost as many as were recorded throughout the entire previous year, which saw 903 such cases.

It is noteworthy that the GPU began to separate these two articles in their reports starting in 2022.
Right now, 60% of the cases have gone to court. This is almost the same as it was in the same period in 2023.
Also, this year, the percentage of cases closed during the investigation stage has dropped a lot. In 2024, only 2% of cases (17 cases) were closed, compared to 14% in 2021.

In May 2024, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law stating that sending offensive messages and sexual photos can result in a fine of up to 2720 UAH.
