Roughly Equal Numbers of Girls and Boys Born
31 July 2023
96,755 children were born in Ukraine in the first half of 2023, including 47,129 girls and 49,626 boys. This is a 28% decrease compared to the corresponding period in 2021 when 135,079 children were born, and even lower than the same period last year.
Overall birth rates in the country have been declining since 2014 at an approximate rate of 7% per year. However, the full-scale invasion has led to the largest crisis in the number of new Ukrainians, marking the sharpest decline in the entire history of independence. The previous anti-peak was also linked to the war, with a 12% drop in birth rates in 2015.

This year, on average, 16,100 babies are born each month. For comparison, in previous years before the full-scale invasion, the number of infants ranged between 21,000 and 23,000 newborns per month. In recent years, more boys have been born than girls, and the onset of the major war has not significantly altered this distribution, with 51% being boys and 49% being girls.
