The skyrocketing increase in the death toll cannot be caused only by the intensification of COVID-19. In March this year, 16,000 people died from the coronavirus, while the disease caused 13,000 deaths in the corresponding period of 2021.
Before the pandemic, 160,000 Russians had died on average in March over the past five years. In March this year, Russia saw 201,000 deaths.
