Top most dangerous roads in Ukraine

Nearly 2,000 people lost their lives, and almost 21,000 were injured in road accidents since the beginning of the year. The most accidents happened in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa regions. The most dangerous highways by the number of accidents are currently the M-06 Kyiv — Chop and the M-30 Stryi — Uman — Dnipro — Izvaryne roads.
16,621 road accidents involving casualties occurred in Ukraine since the beginning of 2024. This is 11% more compared to the same period last year. As a result of these accidents, 1,918 people lost their lives, and 20,862 were injured.
The number of road accidents with casualties shows that most of these incidents — 80% — occur in populated areas, while 15% happened on national highways. Notably, this year, accidents in populated areas increased by 13%, while the number of accidents on highways remained almost unchanged.
The highest number of accidents with casualties was recorded in Kyiv, with 1,393 incidents. Following are populated areas in Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa regions, which rank second and third with 1,350 and 1,148 incidents, respectively.
In Odesa, the number of accidents increased dramatically this year—by as much as 40% compared to the same period last year. The number of fatalities in this region also rose significantly, by 70%.
The M-06 highway (Kyiv — Chop) remains the most dangerous road, with 292 accidents involving casualties over the first 8 months of 2024. Following closely is the M-30 highway (Stryi — Uman — Dnipro — Izvaryne), where 291 accidents were recorded. Completing the top three is the M-03 highway (Kyiv — Kharkiv — Dovzhanskyi), with 156 accidents involving casualties.
Almost half of the accidents in Ukraine are caused by speeding violations, accounting for 39.9%. Other top causes include improper maneuvering (23%) and violations of intersection crossing rules (9.6%).
