Number of marriages falls threefold over past 30 years

The number of marriages decreased threefold over the past 30 years. In 2020, 167,900 marriages were officially registered, against 493,000 in 1991.

Over the past year, the figure decrease by 29%. The dynamic may be due to the quarantine, although the downward trend in marriages was observed earlier, too.

Divorces are also declining, albeit not as fast as marriages. In 1991, 200,810 couples divorced, and in 2020 — 119,253.

In Ukraine, divorces are handled either by the Civil Status Registration Offices if the couple has no children and property disputes or, otherwise, by courts. The latter usually handle the most divorces (about 70%).
