Marriage Trends in 2024: Ukrainians are divorcing more frequently, marrying less often, and entering more prenuptial agreements. According to the Ministry of Justice, over 72,000 marriages were registered in the first half of 2024. This is a 15% decrease compared to the same period last year. In contrast, prenuptial agreements have increased by 25%, and divorces have surged by 50% compared to the previous year.
72,766 new families were formed in Ukraine in the first half of 2024. This is a 15% decrease compared to the same period last year and a 33% decrease compared to 2022. Notably, after the wedding boom in the first year of the full-scale invasion, the number of marriages has gradually declined each year. This year, for the first time, fewer new families were created compared to before the large-scale war.
At the same time, it can be said that new families are being formed more consciously: Ukrainians are increasingly entering into marriage contracts. Notaries have used 3,768 notarial forms for marriage contracts since the beginning of the year. This is a 25% increase compared to the same period last year.
The capital remains the leader in the number of marriages, with 9,392 new families. The second place is held by the Dnipropetrovsk region with 7,076 marriages, and the third place goes to the Odesa region with 4,896 newly formed families.
After a decline in the first year of the full-scale war, the number of divorces has been steadily increasing for two years. In the first six months of 2024, 15,578 divorces were registered. This is 1.5 times more than the same period last year and 18% more than the first half of 2021.
In the anti-rating for the number of divorces, Kyiv leads with 2,118 divorces. The top three also includes Dnipropetrovsk region with 1,404 divorces and Kharkiv region, where 1,148 couples divorced.
Excluding occupied territories and regions with ongoing combat, the fewest divorces occurred in Zakarpattia Oblast—224 cases, while the fewest marriages took place in Chernivtsi Oblast—1,376 new families this year.
