Which regions have the most newborns?

Over 180 thousand children were born in Ukraine in 2023 according to the Ministry of Justice. This is almost a third less than before the start of the full-scale war. The most newborns were in Kyiv, and the least were in the Kherson region.
187,387 children were born in Ukraine in 2023. This is 32% less than in 2021 when 273,772 babies were born.

In the first year of the invasion, the number of newborns sharply decreased by 25%, to 206,000 children. For comparison, from 2010 to 2013, Ukraine used to have about half a million births per year.

The biggest decrease in birth rates in 2023, excluding temporarily occupied and conflict areas, was observed in Kyiv — 19,979 babies. This is 33% less than in 2021.
Despite this, the capital city still has the highest number of newborn Ukrainians. In second place is Lviv region with 16,638 newborns last year. Closing the top three leaders is Dnipropetrovsk region with 14,433 newborns.
It’s worth mentioning that compared to the first year of the full-scale war, last year saw an increase in newborns in the regions near the front lines, such as Mykolaiv Oblast (+5%) and Kharkiv Oblast (+3%). The most significant decrease in birth rate, −18%, was recorded in Poltava Oblast.
