The Number of Fatal Alcohol Poisoning Cases Has Decreased Fourfold

As many as 2,513 Ukrainians died in 2020 from alcohol intoxication and accidental poisoning often caused by counterfeit (fake) alcohol. It is a fourfold drop over the past 16 years.

In 2005, about 10,216 individuals died from overdrinking and counterfeit alcohol abuse. In the years that followed, the respective mortality rate had been steadily declining. While in the middle of the noughties, the number of individuals fatally poisoned daily was as high as 28 on average, while their number is only about 7 nowadays.

In total, alcohol intoxication has killed 81,447 individuals over the past 16 years. Among the causes of death typically associated with drinking, heart failure has been one of the leading ones during this time, with a total of 85,203 deaths caused by alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

In the first quarter of 2021, as many as 580 Ukrainians have already died from alcohol poisoning.
