The full-scale war has exacerbated the country’s population decline

5 August 2024

In the first half of 2024, Ukraine recorded 87,655 births, which is 9% fewer than in the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Justice. Meanwhile, 250,972 deaths were recorded. The highest numbers of both births and deaths were in Dnipropetrovsk oblast and Kyiv.

Birth rates have decreased 1.5 times this year compared to the period before the full-scale invasion: 87,655 children were born compared to 132,595 in 2021.

The highest number of newborns was registered in Kyiv — 9,695 children, in Lviv oblast — 7,923, and in Dnipropetrovsk oblast — 6,962. Frontline regions have consistently low birth rates: Kherson oblast saw 221 births, and Donetsk oblast saw 702. In Luhansk oblast, no newborns were registered in the first half of the year.

As of January-June 2024, for every newborn citizen, there are currently three deaths. This ratio is a key indicator of the demographic crisis. In comparison, during the pre-COVID years 2018-2020, there were two deaths for every newborn. In the first half of 2024, 250,972 people died in Ukraine. This is 1.4 times fewer than the same period in 2021, when 349,041 deaths were recorded. However, it should be noted that 2021 was a peak year for deaths due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
